Title
This is a multi-instrument tutorial where Paul takes you through the parts for the Acoustic guitar, Electric guitar, Bass guitar and Drums for his new single Ever Present Past.
It's a very accessible song to learn and is recommended for both beginners and more experienced players whether you play guitar, drums or bass.
GUITAR The acoustic guitar part uses the more basic open chord positions making it perfect for beginners which is also true of the single note hook that Paul takes you through on electric guitar. More experienced guitarists can get their teeth into the main electric riff which makes use of some slides up the fret board as well as some nice muting. There's also some classic rock'n'roll riffing on the electric rhythm part that comes in on the chorus.
BASS
The Bass part can be taken on two levels, beginners can start out by playing the basic root notes of the song but Paul also gives you some helpful suggestions about how you can develop the part by sliding up the neck and making use of some other notes to create more melody within the bass line.
DRUMS
The drum part to this song is a classic, kick snare and hats, rock'n'roll beat, which makes it ideal for anyone just starting out. But, as with the bass part there are suggestions as to how you can add to this by putting in some fills. Here in particular Paul is keen for you to be creative and perhaps come up with a few ideas of your own!
Each instrument is covered separately with all the close ups, chord boxes and opportunities to play along that you would expect from a NowPlayIt tutorial. However, this is a lesson with a difference as not only does he take you through all the parts to the song but he actually records each part live before adding the next, gradually building the track up layer by layer, track by track. At the end of the lesson all the parts are put together creating a live multi instrument play-through. This is a bonus feature and as well as this live play-through, you also get the standard now play it play-through where you get the single and promo video with chord boxes layered over it for the bass, electric and acoustic parts.
All this makes for a tutorial quite unlike anything we've done before. As well as being four tutorials in one, its also a great insight into the spontaneity and creativity of multi-track recording and an intimate look at one of the most influential musicians of the 20th Century at work.
