Mike from The Bravery takes you through the bass lines for the song “Believe", taken from the album 'The Sun and the Moon'. In the tutorial, Mike demonstrates how the bass can take the lead of the song and not just sit back and support the rest of the band. He almost plays it like a guitar and shows how this can be a great way to add diversity and additional dynamics to a song. Beginners out there can have a go at the basic positions and for you intermediate players, there’s a load of passing notes and fills for you to get into! A great tutorial on how to break the mold and approach bass playing in a different light.

Another superb tutorial from the Bravery camp! Anthony is a technically brilliant drummer and an even better tutor. In the tutorial, he breaks down each beat and explains in detail what he is playing and why. For instance, there is a useful section where he demonstrates a high hat pattern that he plays in sixteenths but with one hand as the tempo is at a slower pace. In addition, he focuses on clever parts that sound great but aren’t too challenging to play, such as a variety of short snare fills before each change. Both beginner and intermediate drummers can easily learn a lot from this tutorial, as the basic beat is quite accessible whilst the fills (and especially the unusually timed signature fill that kicks the song in) offer a technically more complex challenge in learning. The tutorial also highlights the importance of playing confidently on every hit to result in a tight groove that stays ‘on the money’ from the first hit to the last fill.

Sam and Michael, half of the New York rockers The Bravery, take you through recent single “Believe”.
There’s loads packed into this tutorial, you’ll learn both the guitar chord parts as well as some more advanced lead lines (With Michael giving some great instruction on the use of pentatonic scales to create solos).

In addition, this tutorial debuts the new Now Play It solo tab system, designed to enhance the learning aspect and understanding of playing guitar solos and allowing you to see more clearly than ever which notes are being played. With a bit of practice, you’ll be tearing up the fret board in no time!

Lead guitarist Michael gives you an amazingly structured tutorial, filled with a variety of nice techniques and ideas to learn and develop. For those looking to improve picking and lead lines, this tutorial has it all. The atmospheric intro to the song is played as high as the 20th fret and includes slides and string bends, used in conjunction with some nice delay and reverb effects from his pedals. The basic chords to the song are fairly simple and are great for anyone who wants to learn bar chords or if you’ve already mastered these you can start to incorporate elements of lead playing around them. For the more advanced players, the lead line later develops into a faster and more technical mini solo pattern which will put your picking and fret hand coordination to the test! Throughout the whole tutorial Michael also comments on his equipment, giving useful advice on variables such as pick-up selection and also gives a quick intro to how a left handed guitar is setup. Once again, an entertaining tutorial with loads to learn from.

This energetic tutorial breaks down all of the sections of the Bravery’s breakthrough classic and is great practice for any player who is looking to improve their stamina and control in both hands. This is especially true of the fret hand as the bass line incorporates octaves on every single note, which you play with your little finger. This octave style bass line is not only great in this song but also invaluable to any bass player wanting to learn the classic ‘four to the floor, disco’ style of bass playing. The tempo of this song is quite rapid so Mike gives you tips on how to keep your playing tight and punchy. He even advises on picks and the benefits of using them when playing bass. Like many disco style songs, it’s the bass part provides the character and drives the whole song along, making this a lot of fun to play along to!

n this tutorial, Anthony gives a great lesson on what is effectively a standard disco drumbeat. This is an important beat to learn for any beginner, as it’s not too difficult, yet is extremely versatile and has been used across so many genres of music. As Anthony explains, once you have become comfortable with the alternating kick then snare on-beats, the main focus of the drum part is on the high hats and the various accents that they can bring to the entire part. One example of this is knowing when to open the high hats for one beat, then quickly closing them again to resume the bar that you’re playing. This is where the art of Anthony’s playing comes into it’s own, it’s an easy beat to master in it’s basic form but it’s the subtle variations – especially on the hats – that make it work so well. Overall, a really useful and well-presented beginner drum tutorial!
